Atlantic Frontiers 2025: Beyond Borders

January 27-30, 2025

The prestigious Atlantic Frontiers conference “Beyond Borders” will host two special sessions highlighting EU Mission Ocean’s initiatives in the Atlantic-Arctic region this January in Tromsø, Norway.

On January 27, a special session will showcase innovative approaches to ocean restoration and freshwater health through the lens of four major projects: BlueMissionAA, CLIMAREST, A-AAGORA, and BioProtect. Co-organized by NIVA, The Research Council of Norway, and Innovation Norway, this event promises to deliver crucial insights into sustainable ocean management strategies. The session marks EU Mission Ocean’s first appearance at such an Arctic forum, underscoring the growing importance of collaborative efforts in marine conservation.

The following day, BlueMissionAA researcher Saskia Trubbach from NIVA will deliver a science keynote addressing the complex challenges of managing transboundary Marine Protected Areas. Her presentation will explore the implementation of the Arctic Council’s Ecosystem Approach across Northeast Atlantic and Arctic marine regions, focusing on the regulatory frameworks of Norway, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and Greenland. The talk will examine current efforts toward pan-Arctic collaboration and their implications for ecosystem-based management.

In addition to these events, BlueMissionAA will actively engage with businesses, policy makers, innovators, and researchers both at the inaugural Arctic Youth Conference and the Arctic Frontiers conference. Particular focus is being put on those target audiences and stakeholders that will be of particular interest to enhance the overall collaboration further and coordinate and support the mission implementation of the EU Mission Ocean in the Atlantic and Arctic lighthouse.

These sessions represent a significant step forward in bridging the gap between policy, science, and innovation in Arctic marine conservation, offering attendees a comprehensive look at the future of sustainable ocean management in one of Earth’s most sensitive regions.
