ICES and BlueMissionAA Nature Restoration Webinar

Recovery and Restoration - Policy Needs from Science

About the Event

Join us for an engaging and insightful webinar on marine ecosystem restoration, focusing on how science can inform and support effective restoration initiatives and policy frameworks. By restoring ecological integrity and sustainability, restoration efforts play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity and supporting resilient marine environments and healthy oceans.

Key Questions to Be Addressed

  • How can existing marine science be adapted to better support policy frameworks for implementing and assessing restoration targets?
  • What new research is required to bridge gaps in knowledge and improve restoration strategies?
  • Are there notable success stories that can offer valuable insights and best practices?
  • How can restoration methods be tailored to various ecosystem components – such as fish, marine mammals, benthos, and birds – as well as specific environmental conditions including eutrophication in the Baltic and Black Sea and connections to terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems?

Building on discussions from the Workshop on Nature Restoration (4–7 March 2025), this webinar will present key workshop findings while exploring additional advancements necessary for translating scientific research into actionable policy measures.

As part of the BlueMissionAA project framework, this event aligns with EU Mission Ocean objectives through knowledge exchange and refining methodologies for ecosystem restoration. Essential insights on indicator development to assess restoration effectiveness will be showcased, providing a foundation for guiding EU policies such as the Restoration Law.

Webinar Structure

The webinar will feature two sessions – morning and afternoon. Both sessions will focus on disseminating knowledge and providing a practical approach to recovery and restoration, with particular emphasis on initiatives relevant to policy needs from science. Each session will feature expert-led discussions, panel presentations, and interactive Q&A opportunities.

Registration is free but required to receive the webinar link and materials.

This webinar is jointly organized by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) and the BlueMissionAA project as part of ongoing efforts to support EU Mission Ocean objectives and advance marine ecosystem restoration science and policy.
