On July 9-11, the BlueMissionAA participated at the Marine Protected Areas in Marine Spatial Planning Conference in Bodø, Norway with a critical intervention to over 72 participants, delivered by Sebastian M.K.H. Kopf, from the project’s partner NIVA – Norwegian Institute for Water Research.
He highlighted significant gaps in current marine protected area (MPA) approaches, calling for greater equity, true inclusion, and meaningful marine protection. His presentation challenged the practice of inviting citizens, particularly young people, to participate without financial support while others attend in paid roles—a disparity that undermines equity and limits representation.
Sebastian Kopf emphasized that “Engagement is good. Inclusion is better”., arguing that meaningful inclusion must begin at the planning stage, not after decisions are made. He also questioned the effectiveness of many MPAs that still allow damaging practices like bottom trawling. Can we really call these areas protected? What do we tell the next generation?
The session pointed three critical points:
Equity must be built in: Financial barriers preventing meaningful participation must be addressed from the start.
Inclusion starts at the design stage: Diverse stakeholders must be involved in planning, not just consultation.
MPAs must mean real protection: Protected areas should provide genuine protection from harmful activities.
The International Conference on Marine Planning Areas in Marine Spatial Planning attracted 120-180 participants and covered all aspects of Marine Protected Areas within Marine Spatial Planning, contributing to discussions about making marine conservation more equitable and effective for future generations.
